Bloodborne Pathogens Training Requirements (OSHA Mandates Every Year)

You must renew your BBP certificate every year: All Body art professionals who are exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) while performing their routine work functions need to receive bloodborne pathogens training. This includes:

  • Tattoo Artists
  • Body Piercers
  • Permanent Cosmetologists
  • Permanent Make-Up
  • Microblading
  • Branding
  • Scarification
  • Subdermal Implants
  • Tongue splitting
  • Transdermal Implants

This course provides training as required by OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29CFR 1910.1030). Material covered in the course includes definitions of bloodborne pathogens, modes of transmission, universal precautions, engineering and work practice controls, exposure control plans, hepatitis B vaccinations, and other information needed to the safety of the tattoo artist or body piercer. Additional topics on infection control, aseptic techniques, and prevention of disease transmission are also included in this course. While these topics are not required as part of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, they are required by some states, and we highly recommend these topics even if it's not required in your location.

Minnesota Tattoo BBP Training for Tattooing Requirements / Body Art License:

BBP coursework of at least five hours must be completedwithin the year PRECEDING your initial application or your renewal application. In order to qualify for the training requirements of Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 146B.03, Subd. 4, the training must include:

  1. Bloodborne pathogens (Body Art Bloodborne Pathogens)
  2. The prevention of disease transmission
  3. Infection control
  4. Aseptic techniques.

To comply with the five-hour requirement, an applicant may choose to take multiple courses. All individuals applying for or renewing a Minnesota Body Art Technician or a Minnesota Guest Artist license must attach copies of certificate(s) with their application. New York City Body Art License (BBP Training for Tattooing) Requirements:

New York City Body Art License (BBP Training for Tattooing) Requirements (Click Here) : A Tattoo License is required for an individual tattoo artist working in New York City and is designed to control and prevent the spread of infectious diseases in New York City. To obtain a Tattoo License an individual must successfully complete a three hour Infection Control Course and an Infection Control Examination conducted by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's (DOHMH) Health Academy. Submission of an application for the Tattoo Artist License and registration for the Infection Control Course occur at the same time. The license will be mailed to the specific person named in the application after he or she has taken the course and passed the written examination. The license is not transferable to another person or entity.

Las Vegas (Southern Nevada Health District) Body Art License Requirements:

Las Vegas (Southern Nevada Health District) Body Art License Requirements (Click Here): New applicants, including apprentices, must complete the application in person at the City of Las Vegas Development Services Center. An appointment will be made to take the written Sanitation Exam. Applicants have 30 days to take the required infectious disease training.

Course Objectives – Upon completion of this course, you will be able to

  • Understand the purpose of OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, how it applies to the body art industry, and need for bloodborne pathogens & infection control training for tattooing, piercing artists and permanent makeup artists.
  • Medical/health issues associated with body art industry.
  • How cross contamination and contact transmission occurs in shops.
  • Bloodborne pathogens (HIV, Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus) & selected communicable diseases (Hepatitis A, Staphylococcus auerus infections, including MRSA, Tuberculosis, Impetigo, Scabies, Ringworm, Molluscum Contagiosum, Herpes Simplex, and Herpes Zoster)
    • Identification of the disease
    • Description of the infectious agent
    • Mode of transmission
    • Incubation period
    • Period of communicability
    • Prevention of transmission in the tattoo establishment
  • Know the minimum operational requirements (sanitary and safety requirements) related to the design and operation of tattoo establishments, and temporary establishments.
  • Know the Standard Precautions and available PPE to prevent transmission of bloodborne pathogens & common skin infections.
  • Know the basics of infection control, sterilization by autoclave, and aseptic techniques used to prevent disease transmission in the tattoo establishments.
  • Know the steps to take following an exposure incident.
